These Japanese market ZO-3 amplified travel guitars are quite the rage in Japan
(pronounced “zohsan”: “Zō” means elephant in Japanese, and “san” means three).
They have been produced in many colors, and also every year there are limited edition colors or graphics, some of which can reach insane prices.
Early ones were made in Japan, and after the mid or late 90’s they were made in China. They are still being produced today.
Maple neck with a very nicely figured rosewood fingerboard, 24″ scale, 22 frets.
Hardware is clean. Body is clean and polished, fretboard is clean and conditioned, frets are polished. There is very little wear on the frets, bit of wear on the fretboard on the first 3 frets as per pics. The body has its fair share of retouched dings along the edges, but all in all this just adds personality to this hot rod 🙂
Guitar is strung with a set of 9-42 Fernandes, so you can unleash your inner Pablo Gilberto with them insane bends around the campfire. There is a number of ways in which you can use this guitar:
*The humbucker is passive, so you can use this guitar plugged into an amp as you would any guitar, even if no battery is installed. The sound is a regular clean guitar sound, and you can add whatever effects you please.
*If you install the 9V battery, you can use it either plugged into the amp as above, or as a nomad travel guitar with the onboard amplifier and speaker.
When using the onboard speaker, the “eye” of the elephant will light up 😀
In nomad mode, you can control the gain with the volume knob, from a clean almost on the edge of breakup, to a more crunchy early AC/DC type rock tone. With volume full up, you even get (musical) feedback!
The guy in the video does a good demo of all the sounds.
This guitar is an iconic piece of Japanese culture, and a fun guitar to take on your trips or just noodle on for a quick break.
